Melton Mowbray - The Area
Melton Mowbray is a mediaeval
market town surrounded by beautiful countryside situated in the County of Leicestershire.
Melton Mowbray holds one of the busiest markets in England and is the only Leicestershire
market recorded by the Domesday Survey of 1086.
Situated in the market place are the recontructed Butter Cross and Corn Cross,
two of the four crosses originally located in the town centre to indicate different
types of market held there.
Melton Mowbray is famed
for its local delicasies of Pork Pies and Stilton Cheese.
Stilton has the longest history. The cheese was developed in the villages to
the east of Melton Mowbray possibly as early as the 14th century. Mrs Pawlett,
who was born at Sproxton, entered into a business arrangement with Cooper Thornhill,
landlord of the Bell at Stilton, to market the cheese that she and others were
making. The cheese was later to become famous as Stilton.
Did you know?....Painting
the Town Red means having a good time today, but in 1837 it meant precisely
what it says. At the time, Melton Mowbray was the metropolis of fox hunting
and the eccentric Marquis of Waterford and friends decided after a days sporting
activity to redecorate the town. Several buildings, the toll gate and the unfortunate
toll keeper were all painted bright red!!
So when anyone refers to Painting the Town Red it reflects boisterous times
in Melton Mowbray.
